The Black German Shepherd, also known as the Black Alsatian, is a robust dog. Adult males weigh approximately 79 pounds, while adult females weigh about 75 pounds. They stand approximately 25 to 28 inches tall, and their bodies are generally long rather than tall. Despite their long legs, they are generally healthy and rarely suffer from health issues like eye or ear problems. This breed does not suffer from hip dysplasia, however one puppy has suffered from epileptic seizures after receiving its rabies vaccination, and two dogs were reported to have suffered from arthritis in 2003.

As a puppy, your American Alsatian needs about four times the amount of food an adult does. Their small stomachs are not able to digest large quantities of food at one time.

The Black German Shepherd will need at least 1.19 grams of protein per pound of body weight. The dog’s double coat is very luxurious, so it can shed a lot of fur. The dog needs to have meals at different times to avoid bloating.
